Sports Massage

How It Can Help You Move Better,

Feel Better, and Perform Better

As a personal trainer, sports massage therapist, and rehab specialist, I’ve seen firsthand the incredible benefits of sports massage for a wide range of clients. Whether you’re an athlete looking to optimise performance, someone recovering from an injury, or simply dealing with the everyday stresses that take a toll on your body, sports massage can be a game-changer.

What is Sports Massage?

Sports massage is a targeted approach to soft tissue therapy that helps prevent and treat injuries, improve mobility, and promote overall well-being. It’s not just for athletes—anyone experiencing muscle tightness, chronic pain, or mobility restrictions can benefit.

Unlike a standard relaxation massage, sports massage focuses on specific muscle groups and movement patterns. It incorporates deep tissue work, myofascial release, trigger point therapy, and stretching techniques to relieve tension and restore function.

How I’ve Helped My Clients

I’ve worked with a variety of clients, each with unique needs and goals. Here are a few ways sports massage has made a difference:

🔹 Reducing Pain & Stiffness– A client with chronic lower back pain found significant relief after regular sports massage sessions. By working on the surrounding muscle imbalances and improving circulation, their pain levels decreased, and movement became easier.

🔹 Improving Mobility & Flexibility– One of my hypermobile clients struggled with joint instability and frequent discomfort. Through a combination of deep tissue work and assisted stretching, we were able to improve muscle control and reduce excessive joint movement, leading to more stability and confidence in daily activities.

🔹 Accelerating Recovery from Injuries– A runner recovering from knee pain saw a major improvement with targeted massage sessions focusing on their quads, hamstrings, and IT band. Alongside a tailored rehab programme, massage therapy helped them return to training safely and efficiently.

🔹 Enhancing Athletic Performance– Many of my clients use sports massage as a key part of their training regimen. By reducing muscle tightness, increasing circulation, and promoting faster recovery, they’ve been able to push harder in training while reducing the risk of injury.

Techniques Used in Sports Massage

Each session is tailored to the individual, but here are some of the techniques I commonly use:

✅ Deep Tissue Massage– Targets deeper layers of muscle and fascia to release tension and improve movement quality.

✅ Trigger Point Therapy– Focuses on specific tight knots within the muscle that cause referred pain and dysfunction.

✅ Myofascial Release– Works on the connective tissue to improve mobility and reduce stiffness.

✅ Active & Passive Stretching– Helps improve range of motion and muscle flexibility.

✅ Muscle Energy Techniques (METs)– Uses controlled muscle contractions to improve flexibility, mobility, and neuromuscular function.

Why Should You Book a Sports Massage?

People come to me for sports massage for many different reasons, including:

✔ Pain Relief– If you suffer from tension headaches, lower back pain, or general muscle stiffness, massage can help reduce discomfort.

✔ Injury Recovery– Whether it’s a recent injury or an old one that still limits you, sports massage can help speed up the healing process.

✔ Improved Performance– Athletes and fitness enthusiasts use massage to maintain their bodies and get the most out of their training.

✔ Better Mobility– If you feel tight, restricted, or stiff, massage can help loosen up muscles and improve range of motion.

✔ Stress Reduction– Physical tension and mental stress go hand in hand. Massage therapy helps both the body and mind relax.

I have recently been for two sports massage sessions with Davina, on top of my regular PT and what can I say, she is fab!! I have had issues in the past with my lower back after a car accident and she has helped so much. I also suffered from deltoid pain which again Davina has worked on and released. Davina explains exactly what she is going to do and why she is doing it and constantly reassures you. I think she is great and really recommend Davina.
